Actor Jang Hyuk sets new goal through Lee Mi-sook and Lee Soon-jae.

On the 8th Feb, Jang Hyuk carried out an interview after the end of MBC weekend drama “Money Flower” at a cafe in Sangsadong, Gangnam-gu, Seoul.

Jang Hyuk said, “I set a new goal for myself through this work. In another 20 years, my acting career life will be 40 years old. Lee Mi-sook already has 40 years, and Lee Soon-jae has 60 years. I have been going on for over 20 years now. Once I endure another 20 years, constantly building characters and integrating with people, then would I be able to achieve the age of Lee Mi-sook and Lee Soon-jae. I have a goal to become an actor as unique and as enthusiastic as they are. There were so many things to learn.”

He added, “As I looked at their interpretations, I was surprised that such interpretation is possible! The attitude of how they work truly influenced their juniors. Lee Soon-jae is a real master of acting, he is able to control the amount to let go and withhold precisely, which was due to his experience and age.”

In ‘Money Flower’ Jang Hyuk played the role of Kang Pil-joo, who intentionally approached Lee Mi-sook (Jung Mal-ran) and Jang Seung-Jo (Jang Boo-cheon) to seek a revenge he had been planning for 20 years.

SPOILER ALERT

I started shooting after receiving only 3 episodes of the script, so it was filmed without knowing what is going to happen next. When we were deliberating whether this drama is going to have a happy or sad ending, the director says, “I will not shoot a drama about dead people”, so the ending reflects the writer’s idea. From my point of view, getting back the name Jang Eun-cheon means a complete ending. In the last episode, there was actually a scene which Pil-joo and Mo-hyun look at each other, but it was edited out. If they have looked at each other, it would mean a new beginning. Editing this out leaves viewers with a lingering expectation.

Park Se-young is a very hardworking junior. When we were acting in ‘Beautiful Mind’ she would ask me which feeling should she portray? After I replied her, she can portray it within one second, and has been maintaining this way since then. This time it is also the same, she is really a very sincere person, well taken care of, has a good up-bringing, works hard to improve herself, and has a very good attitude towards her work.

My biggest turning point was enlisting in the army. After leaving, getting married and having kids, i was already in my 30s. Now I am in my 40s. I feel that I should take on more projects at this age in order to enrich my experience. It is only through more challenging roles and genre that I can widen my spectrum. It is just like the competitors who are taking part in the boxing match this year, those who had many sparring matches will find it easier. In this way then we can continue to move forward, otherwise we will be forever at the same spot. As compared to remaining at the same spot, I would rather get criticisms as I move forward.

I hope that viewers can trust my acting, as it is impossible for humans not to make mistakes. When i was young, I carved the words “passion” on my chair, hoping not to lose that as I grow up. That is the reason why seniors can last so long in the acting field. They say “When you are acting, your skills only count 30%, and your attitude counts for 70%. Only with a positive attitude can you continue for a long time.

Frankly speaking, of course I hope to win prizes, but it is not something I would ponder upon. Thinking back, I have gotten second place many times, but because of the fact that there is always someone better than me, it spurs me on further. It would be stressful if I aim to meet everyone’s expectations, I hope that I can be an actor who sets my own pace.

Q : Will there be a second season for Money Flower?

A : I do not know, but the writer does not seem to have this intention.

  1. I love that Passion and how it comes through in each role. Even if I personally don’t like a drama for reasons, I know he gave it his all, and it’s usually not his fault.

“the director says, “I will not shoot a drama about dead people” – THANK YOU, Director-Nim. I hate watching a drama that ends in protagonist’s death. Most of the time for me it’s like “Then what’s the point of all this drama? They died!” I can understand why some would have a character death, I just prefer living, happy endings.

My only real qualm with Money Flower was so much build up with the OTP and NO kiss, maybe too much lingering expectation.

Lee Soon-jae was kind of the butt of jokes on a fan group for “Mystery Science Theater 3000 Season 11. We all call him “Capsule!” Because of the character he played – a man who worked with the Space program. I had the chance to tell them who he was and how he’s in everything and a huge Kdrama star. I highly recommend watching MST3K s.11 – The episode for “Yongary.” It’s a 1960’s SK monster movie similar to the Godzilla films. I laughed myself silly.

    Found the clip!

    • Thanks for the clip, Lady G. So many times when I enjoy the older Korean actors, I’ll try to look up their past works on AsianWiki but usually the movie/ show is too old for much detail.

      Thanks, prettysup, for translating!

  2. He is always so amazing!!!

  3. Love his attitude towards his work and perspective in life..

  4. So passionate, so dedicated – and so sexy too. 😍 I love that he’s amazing at what he does, and still seems so genuinely impressed by his seniors, and so eager to learn from them. ❤
